PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Thunderbird men’s golf team opened competition at the Grand Canyon University Invitational on Friday morning. They are playing at the GCU Championship Golf Course in Phoenix.
As a team the Thunderbirds shot 587 (291, 296) to finish the day in 13th place.
Junior Fidel Concepcion led the way for the Thunderbirds, finishing the first day in a tie for 12th. Concepcion shot a 71 in the first round and a 69 in the second to finish the day at two-under.
Jake Vincent finished the day in a tie for 26th on the leaderboard, shooting one-over. He shot an even 71 in the first round, followed by a 72 in the second to finish the day at 143. Ali Hameed was third for the T-Birds and in a tie for 75th on the leaderboard, finishing the day at 151 (73, 78).
Christian Karren was fourth for the Thunderbirds, ending the day in a tie for 83rd after shooting two rounds that finished at 77. He finished in a tie for 83rd on the leaderboard.
Brodey Payzant was the fifth scorer for SUU, shooting a 157 (76, 81) and in a tie for 89th.
Bradley Collet and Humza Hameed both played as individuals for the Thunderbirds on Friday. Collet finished in 85th after shooting a 155 (79, 76) and Humza Hameed finished tied for 95th with a 162 (80, 82).
Duke finished the day in first as a team, shooting a combined 556 (287, 269). Billy Comeaux from Grand Canyon and Jared Multer from Eastern Michigan finished the day tied in the first position on the leaderboard.
Play will resume on Saturday morning, with 18-holes of action remaining.
