Thunderbirds Ready to Take On Rebels
By SUU Strategic Communication
CEDAR CITY, Utah - With just two weeks left in the regular season, the Thunderbird men’s tennis team is headed to Las Vegas for a Sunday evening matchup with the UNLV Rebels.
The Thunderbirds are coming off of a full week of Big Sky matchups with the Idaho State Bengals and the Weber State Wildcats. They dropped both matches, falling to the Bengals last Wednesday by a score of 6-1 and then to the Wildcats on Sunday 5-2. Despite the losses, freshman Cedric Rupa continued his great singles play this season. Rupa picked up wins over ISU’s Haseeb Khan (7-5, 7-5) and WSU’s Scott Hintze (7-5, 5-10, 10-5) in the No. 6 position. He now holds a 9-5 record in singles play.
The Rebels currently hold an 11-6 overall record on the 2017 season. They have only played one conference match to this point, a 4-3 loss to Boise State at home. Last weekend they competed at the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas where they picked up just one win, a 4-0 sweep of Texas A&M - Corpus Christi. The Rebels are led by senior Jakob Amilon, who currently holds an 8-4 record in the No. 1 singles position.
Sunday’s match is set to start at 5:00 p.m. Mountain time at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on UNLV’s campus.
