Women's Tennis Set to Play Final Home Matches This Weekend

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The Southern Utah University women’s tennis team will wrap up their regular season schedule with a doubleheader this weekend at home against Big Sky Conference opponents Weber State and Idaho State.

The Thunderbirds were last in action in Colorado, playing both MSU Denver and Northern Colorado.

The MSU Denver Roadrunners defeated the Thunderbirds 4-3 on Friday, April 14. SUU took the first point of the match through the doubles competition. Thunderbird juniors Mikala Lowrance and Teresa de Enrique Schmidt took the first match 6-3 in the No. 1 position, with sophomore Charity Sagiao and freshman Cloe Stocking securing the point in the No. 3 position 6-4.

In the singles competition, Lowrance and Sagiao won SUU’s final two points in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions respectively, but the Thunderbirds were unable to take another match for the win.

The Thunderbirds played the Northern Colorado Bears next on Saturday, April 15, winning the match 4-3 for their third win of the season. The teams of Lowrance and senior Evgenia Marushko, and Sagiao and Stocking both won their matches in the doubles competition in the No. 1 and No. 3 positions 6-4 and 6-3 respectively.

The Thunderbirds kept the momentum going into the singles competition, taking three more wins to secure the match. In the No. 1 position, Marushko topped UNC’s Anna Battersby 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. Lowrance took her second singles match of the weekend over Bears’ Beth Coton 6-3, 6-3. Southern Utah’s fourth point came in the No. 6 position from junior Laura Martin Lozano over UNC’s Lily-Ana Kreutzer 3-6, 7-6, 6-1.

Up Next

The Thunderbirds will play the first of two matches this Friday against Weber State in a Big Sky matchup. The Weber State Wildcats are 3-15 for the 2017 season, with a 1-7 record away from Ogden. Wildcat Morgan Dickason leads the team with a 7-11 individual record.

SUU’s second match of the weekend will be the Idaho State Bengals in another conference match. The Bengals are 8-10 for the season, having just swept Eastern Washington 7-0. The Bengals are lead by sisters Louise-Mare Botes and Huibre-Mare Botes with records of 14-3 and 12-5 respectively. The Bengals are 2-7 in away matches.

Match Details

The Thunderbirds will play the Wildcats on Friday, April 21, at 2 p.m. in Cedar City. Play will continue on Saturday, April 22, at 10 a.m. against Idaho State, also in Cedar City.
