Southern Utah Takes 11-7 Game-One Victory over Oral Roberts

CEDAR CITY, Utah - April 24 - Southern Utah scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to break the second tie of the game and post an 11-7 victory over Oral Roberts University in game one between the two teams Thursday afternoon. The win improves the Thunderbirds to 22-16 overall and 9-3 in conference, while the Golden Eagles drop to 29-10 and 11-2 in Summit League play.

The T-Birds began the game in the hole after a three-run first inning by ORU, but Southern Utah countered with two runs of its own in the home half of the frame. Oral Roberts added another run in the top of the second to take a 4-2 lead, but a lead-off home run by Cameron Nelson and an RBI by Mac Nelson in the bottom of the inning tied the game at 4-4 after the first three frames.

Southern Utah broke the tie with an RBI single in the fifth and a two-run RBI single in the sixth with the bases loaded to take a 7-4 lead. The advantage was short lived as the Golden Eagles put three on the board in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 7-7.

SUU starter Dustin Wittwer pitched into the seventh inning, allowing six runs (two earned) and six hits, striking out six and walking four in the no decision. Jacob Noyes came on with no outs in the seventh and allowed one run (not earned) and two hits over the final three to collect his third win of the season as the Thunderbirds scored four runs in the home half of the seventh.

The inning began with a one-out single and double by Chester Wilson and Ray Wright with both players crossing the plate on a two-run single by Joe Wright in the next at bat. Southern Utah scored its final two runs on an RBI by Jacob Romney and an RBI single by Nick Freitas.

The Thunderbirds had six players recording multiple hits on the day with Wilson leading the way with a 4-for-5 day and two RBI. Kelly Minissale was the leader for Oral Roberts, going 3-of-4 and collecting two RBI.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow in a doubleheader with the first pitch being thrown at Noon.
