Thunderbird Basketball Announces 2017-18 Schedule
By SUU Strategic Communication
CEDAR CITY, Utah – The Southern Utah University men's basketball team has announced its complete 2017-18 schedule, which is highlighted by a handful of competitive non-conference match-ups.
The preseason schedule includes two Big Ten teams in Iowa and Michigan State, a Pac-12 team in Oregon State, and three Mountain West opponents in UNLV, Boise St., and San Jose St.
"Competing at a high level is a priority for our program and for our student-athletes. We feel we have scheduled a challenging non-conference schedule that Southern Utah has ever played,” head coach Todd Simon said. “Those contests will certainly help develop our young team for conference play."
The Thunderbirds begin play in the Centrum Arena on Nov. 3 as they host Concordia in an exhibition match-up. SUU will then enter non-conference play as they take on both Oregon State (Nov. 10) and Boise State (Nov. 12) on the road.
Opening non-conference play in the Centrum, the Thunderbirds host a Mountain West Conference team for the second straight year in San Jose State (Nov. 16) before hosting Benedictine Mesa on Nov. 21, also in the Centrum.
SUU will then hit the road to face UNLV (Nov. 25) and Pepperdine (Nov. 29). To open December play, the Thunderbirds will host both San Diego Christian (Dec. 2) and Long Beach State (Dec. 6) before facing Michigan State on the road on Dec. 9. Michigan State is currently picked by many experts as the national preseason top team.
Returning home, SUU will host Central Michigan (Dec. 16) before traveling to Iowa to conclude non-conference play on Dec. 19.
The Thunderbirds open Big Sky Conference play at home with Montana State (Dec. 28) followed by Montana (Dec. 30). SUU will tip off the new year on the road with Idaho State (Jan. 4) and Weber State (Jan. 6) before returning home for three-straight games with Northern Arizona (Jan. 13), Idaho (Jan. 18), and Eastern Washington (Jan. 20).
Hitting the road to Montana, SUU will take on Montana (Jan. 25) and Montana State (Jan. 27). The Thunderbirds will then host in-state rival Weber State on Feb. 1 and Idaho State on Feb. 3.
SUU will then take on a trio of road games in Northern Arizona (Feb. 10), North Dakota (Feb. 15), and Northern Colorado (Feb. 17).
Rounding out home play, SUU will host Portland State (Feb. 22) and Sacramento State (Feb. 24) before concluding its BSC season with Eastern Washington (Mar. 1) and Idaho (Mar. 3) on the road.
Following season play, the Thunderbirds will play in the Big Sky Conference Road to Reno tournament.
