At SUU, 2010: Earned consensus first-team all-Great West Conference honors as well as academic all-conference recognition last year when he started all 11 games at strong safety. Finished fourth on the team and first among defensive backs with 60 tackles, led the team with seven passes broken up and had 4.5 tackles-for-loss. Recovered a fumble re returned 16 yards at Wyoming, also forced a pair of fumbles. Had nine tackles, eight solo, at Eastern Washington, where he had two tackles-for-loss. Had seven tackle games, five solo in each, vs. San Diego and at UC Davis.
At SUU, 2009: Finished third on the team in tackles with 68, including 38 solo tackles and 2.5 tackles-for-losses. Also broke up a pair of passes, forced a fumble and recovered two more. Was named Great West Player of the Week for his performance against North Dakota when he returned an interception for a score, broke up two more passes and finished with seven tackles and a TFL. Tackles high was 10 at South Dakota, where he had seven solo stops.
At SUU, 2008: Earned a spot on the travel squad with outstanding special teams play, also saw significant duty at cornerback. Finished the season with 22 tackles, including 15 solo stops, and had 1.5 tackles for loss, broke up a pass and forced a fumble in just seven games. Had eight stops in the spring game, including six solo tackles, and intercepted a pass which he returned 64 yards.
Personal: Graduate of Hemet, Calif. West Valley High where he earned three letters playing for Coach Scott McRitchie’s Mustangs. Tallied 86 tackles with three interceptions and a sack his senior season when he was a team captain and earned second-team all-league honors. Earned the Academic Achievement awards as well as the Grant Walenda Scholarship. Parents are Shelly Vonner and Eric Vonner. Majoring in engineering tech.
